Fading Memories, Embracing Feelings.

The coffee shop was abuzz with ambient noise — the clatter of cups, murmured conversations, and the low hum of background music. Peter sat at a corner table, nursing a cup of cold brew, staring out of the window.

Across from him sat Mia, a woman he hadn’t seen in over twenty years. The two were childhood friends, inseparable in their younger years. A recent chance encounter on social media led them to meet after so long.

Mia had a photo album sprawled out on the table. She flipped through it, pausing every so often to point at a picture and share a story, each more nostalgic than the last.

Peter chuckled at some, furrowed his brow in confusion at others. It wasn’t that he didn’t believe the tales Mia told, it was just that his own memory was a fuzzy patchwork of fragments.

Finally, Mia paused at a photo of them at a county fair. They were perhaps thirteen or fourteen. In it, they stood side by side atop a giant Ferris wheel, with wide smiles and the setting sun painting a golden hue behind them.

"Do you remember this, Peter?" Mia asked, her voice tinged with hope.

Peter scrutinized the photo. "If it turned out to be a good memory, I guess we'd be talking about it more. But I don't remember."

Mia looked a bit disheartened but continued, "It was the day we made that silly pact, remember? We promised that if both of us were single by thirty, we'd marry each other."

A faint smile played on Peter's lips. "That sounds like something we'd joke about. But honestly, Mia, my memory has been betraying me lately. I truly don't recall."

She looked a bit sad, closing the album gently. "It’s okay," Mia whispered, reaching for his hand. "Sometimes, memories fade, but the feelings they leave behind stay."

Peter squeezed her hand in gratitude. They sat in silence, lost in their own thoughts, but comforted by each other’s presence. Sometimes, it wasn't about remembering every moment, but cherishing the emotions that remained.
